A Pennsylvania man attempting to pass through security at Newark Liberty International Airport was caught trying to smuggle a live turtle in his pants, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
TSA Body Scanner Detects Suspicious Item
The unusual discovery occurred on Friday when a body scanner alarm alerted TSA officers to an anomaly in the groin area of the man’s pants. Following standard procedures, an officer conducted a pat-down search and determined that the individual was concealing an object.
When questioned further, the man—who has not been publicly identified—retrieved a live turtle wrapped in a small blue towel from his pants. The turtle was later identified as a red-eared slider, a common pet species that grows to about 5 inches (12 centimeters) long.
Man Escorted Away, Flight Missed
Port Authority police promptly escorted the East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania resident away from the security checkpoint. As a result, he missed his flight. Authorities confiscated the turtle, but it remains unclear whether it was the man’s pet or why he chose to conceal it in his clothing.
TSA’s Response: A First for Live Animal Concealment
TSA’s Federal Security Director for New Jersey, Thomas Carter, commented on the bizarre incident: “We have seen travelers try to conceal knives and other weapons on their person, in their shoes, and in their luggage; however, I believe this is the first time we have come across someone concealing a live animal down the front of their pants.”
Carter assured that the turtle appeared unharmed, despite the man’s actions. The incident is still under investigation, and it remains unclear whether the man will face criminal charges or TSA-imposed penalties.
Ongoing Investigation and Animal Smuggling Concerns
Animal smuggling through airports is not uncommon, but hiding a live turtle inside clothing is a rare occurrence. The TSA regularly intercepts individuals attempting to transport prohibited items, but this case stands out due to its unusual nature.
Authorities have not disclosed what will happen to the confiscated turtle, nor have they provided further details on any potential legal consequences for the traveler.
