Costa Rica News – A Lanamme study pointed out the main errors in building and repairing roads in Costa Rica. It consisted of 2,500 problems repeatedly found in the last 15 years.
The study found deficiencies in the quality of materials and in the practices such as paving. Asphalt should never be placed on wet surfaces or installed during rain, for instance, a common practice in the country. The roads and drains must be cleaned before and after repairs.
Some of the areas with the greatest errors were management and planning, quality control, performance and construction. There are some problems such as drainage that should be fixed in the planning stage. There should be greater management of the variables in the design in pavements to end up with more efficient results.
Other situations causing problems include that the asphalt binder irrigation is not homogenous and does not cover 100% of the area the mix will be placed. There is also an absence of needed machinery such as asphalt binder sprinklers. The findings reported performance problems like cracking a few months after being built.
