Hospital de Día, literally translating to ‘Day Hospital’, caters to patients needing more intricate care than what outpatient services offer, yet not requiring full hospitalization. This ingenious program operates daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., including holidays, ensuring uninterrupted care for patients of all ages across various medical conditions.
Striking the Perfect Balance: Enhanced Care, Reduced Costs
One of the standout advantages of Hospital de Día is its cost-effectiveness. Back in 2019, similar implementations at the Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia and Nacional de las Mujeres Hospitals led to a whopping savings of ¢600 million in just one year. It’s a win-win: superior patient care coupled with significant financial savings.

Hospital de Día is expected to dramatically reduce the length of traditional hospital stays. For instance, a standard seven-day hospitalization could be shortened by up to four days. In a 30-day antibiotic treatment scenario, only three days might be spent in conventional hospitalization, with the rest managed through periodic visits to the health center.
A Growing Trend: Expansion Across Costa Rica
Hospital México joins an elite list of medical facilities in Costa Rica already embracing the Hospital de Día model, including hospitals in Geriatría, San Carlos, San Vicente de Paúl, La Anexión, and Turrialba.
