With no official data at hand, insights from the Institute on Alcoholism and Drug Addiction (IAFA) and seasoned experts unveil a troubling scene: Fentanyl circulating uncontrollably, claiming unsuspecting victims in its wake.
Growing Addiction: Voices from the Field
Paula Picado, an IAFA clinical psychologist and patient care officer, reveals an alarming reality. “We observe a rising tide of individuals ensnared in the chains of Fentanyl addiction, seeking refuge in treatment,” remarks Picado. With overdoses looming, the drug’s lethal nature sends shockwaves of concern through the community.
A Global Threat Knocking at the Door
According to Gustavo Mata, a former Security Minister, the sinister wave of Fentanyl necessitates undivided attention. “It’s not just a drug; it’s a global catastrophe in the making. With Mexican cartels plotting to seed production units across nations, Fentanyl is a ticking time bomb, with the power to unleash a horde of ‘zombies’ across the globe,” warns Mata.
A New Battlefield: Mini-Cartels on the Rise
Álvaro Ramos, another seasoned minister and a connoisseur of security and narcotics trafficking issues, concurs with Mata. “With their gaze fixed on synthetic drugs, particularly Fentanyl, Mexican cartels are recalibrating their strategies. We witness the emergence of smaller groups morphing into mini-cartels within Costa Rica’s borders, assuming roles previously held by colossal international counterparts,” notes Ramos.
A Drug with a Dark Appeal
The allure of Fentanyl for traffickers lies in its economical production cost, although procuring raw materials remains a formidable challenge, inadvertently birthing a black market.
Government’s Crusade Against Fentanyl
Responding to the rising tide, the Costa Rican government initiated a comprehensive drug prevention campaign in March 2023, spotlighting Fentanyl. This initiative encompasses public service announcements, educational content, and specialized training for law enforcement and medical personnel.
International Collaboration: A Joint Endeavor
June 2023 marked a significant milestone as Costa Rica and the United States inked a declaration, pledging cooperation to dismantle the Fentanyl trade network.
