An inmate who escaped Houghton County deputies after a June 2015 court appearance has been found in Costa Rica.
Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean reported Friday, June 10 that John Wesley Saatio was being held by authorities in Costa Rica.
He said sheriff’s officials are working with the FBI and government officials in Costa Rica to have him extradited to Michigan.
Saatio had been on the run since June 19 when he escaped deputies who were returning him to jail following a court hearing.
Saatio reportedly was handcuffed when he ran.
Police think he stole a vehicle and abandoned it in Green Bay after running out of gas, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported. His whereabouts after that were not clear.
Saatio was in jail on charges of home invasion and malicious destruction of police property.
