Costa Rica News – Street food vendors have been given a ray of hope. A new legislation seeks to allow them to work without being persecuted.
As things are now, they are always having to run from the Municipal Police or have their items confiscated.
The police are after them for good reason, because the law stipulates that this type of sale is illegal. The intention of the law was to protect us from unsanitary food that could make us sick.
The reform would give permits to sell street food in specific areas that are hygienic. The Ministry of Health has been given three months to define requirements that will be used in regulating permits.
This could be a win-win situation. Most Costa Ricans benefit from street vendors’ sales. They are convenient and well priced purchases. Many seniors make their livelihood in this business. Soon they will be able to do so without fear.
