Costa Rica News – A new meteorological radar is to be used to detect volcanic ash, hail and storm hazards in a diameter of 120 km.
The contract is with EEC company and includes installation, calibration and two years of maintenance for $600,000.
This technology will allow for a response before a danger occurs. The government as well as the public can be notified about two hours before a hurricane or a hail storm, for instance.
The radar is from the National Meteorological Institute and is thanks to a grant from the National Emergency Commission. It will cover, with great precision, the entire Central Valley as well as much of the north and the Los Santos region.
The radar will detect the formation of cumulonimbus clouds which generate gusts of winds and can form tornadoes, hail and electrical activity. June 1st started the official hurricane season and having this technology can save lives.
