Costa Rica News – All CCSS (CR public hospitals) hospitals have had to suspend outpatient surgeries as a preventive measure.
This is due to suspected contaminated anesthesia used in ambulatory surgical procedures and exams.
The affected procedures are Endoscopies, gastroscopies and colonoscopies as well as programmed ambulatory surgeries. These are procedures that use a specific type of anesthesia to sedate for short times patients who will leave the hospital quickly.
The affected anesthesia is known as Propofol. The non emergency operations and procedures will be rescheduled when the drug becomes available again. It will take about a week to get an emergency supply.
Doctors are obligated to report adverse effects to any medication to the Ministry of Health. Several notifications were received about this medication. Symptoms included chills and fever.
