Costa Rica News – One of the things that Costa Rica is known for is its incredible coffee. As you travel through the mountains and valleys in Costa Rica you will be greeted by coffee plantations almost around every turn. The 2013 Cup of Excellence (Taza de la Excelencia 2013) international competition is a chance to showcase those Costa Rican coffees.
On April 30th they will begin choosing coffee samples to participate in the 2013 Cup of Excellence, to be held on June 19th which will help select the best Costa Rica coffee.
The tastings will be held over three days at the offices of the Specialty Coffee Association of Costa Rica.
The Costa Rican coffee includes a total of 70 samples, who must obtain a minimum score of 85 points to advance to the next stage of international cupping.
Noelia Villalobos, executive director of the association of fine coffee, said there will be 12 national judges who have the task of selecting for the best coffee in the country.
The sweetness and acidity levels will be assessed by experts on these exceptional coffees.
Once samples are selected, you will again be judged this time on an international level.
This portion of the competition will be performed by 30 judges from countries like Japan, USA and Australia, who have the responsibility for providing the scores in the international competition.
The international tasting will be held from the 6th to the 10th of May in the Hotel Herradura.
Last year Zurquí Mists (Brumas del Zurquí) scored a 93.47 on a scale of 100 and broke the record for a price of a Costa Rican coffee in that contest.
On that occasion, three Japanese companies paid $ 4,500 per quintal (46 kilos) for the incredible Costa Rica coffee product.
