APM Terminals to Start Construction on Moin Container Terminal After Court Ruling

Costa Rica News – Costa Rica’s Supreme Court has ruled in favour of the Costa Rica government and APM Terminals in an appeal filed by the Port Workers Union against the 33-year concession contract for the new Moin Container Terminal (TCM) in Limon, on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica.

Moin Container TerminalThe Supreme Court decision ratifies the new Moin container terminal giving life to the project which now, only awaits  January 2015 subject to receiving the final Construction Start Order from the Government,” APM Terminals Central America managing director Paul Gallie told Seatrade Global.

“ThTCM will be a world class, modern, safe and efficient terminal operating under international standards and procedures, designed to boost Costa Rica international trade by taking full advantage of the economies of scale given by the new-Panamax vessels of up to 13,500 teu, vessels of up to five times larger than those which can be services in the country today,” Gallie said.

“We awarded the $46mM construction contract in October 2013 to the Dutch consortium of Van Oord and BAM International. Stage 1 of the contract started 1 November 2013 and consisted of procuring rock and other preliminary activities,” he said.

APM Terminals was contracted by the State and Port Authority, JAPDEVA, for the design, finance, construction, operation and maintenance of the new Moin Container Terminal (TCM). The project will comprise 80 hectares with 1,500 m of berths, nine ship-to-shore gantry cranes and 30 port cranes in addition to a 2.2 km-breakwater, allowing 24/7, all-year-round operation.
